For professionals in their 20s and 30s, working in supply chain management is perceived as engaging and rewarding and is met with focus and enthusiasm. Such are the findings of a new APICS Millennials in Supply Chain research report by Peerless Research Group, made possible by working in collaboration with the American Productivity & Quality Center (APQC) and Supply Chain Management Review (SCMR).

676 individuals working in supply chain management were questioned, each of them born between 1980 and 1995.

The report demonstrates that an increasing number of millennials are starting their career through supply chain recruitment and that there are high levels of job satisfaction in procurement for this demographic. Supply chain design and planning in particular tends to pique their interest.

Respondents viewed the jobs as personally rewarding and diverse. Some of the most pertinent responses are as follows:

  • 81% believe they can make a difference in their chosen field
  • 87% believe their career will lead to personal growth and development
  • 88% believe supply chain jobs offer opportunities for advancement

The report also revealed that, although both male and female workers predominantly start at the same wage level, after they move up the career ladder, differences in salary start becoming apparent. This correlates with research from 2016 pertaining to senior managers.

The gender pay gap is the issue that respondents were most dissatisfied with, along with the attitude of older employees in their organisations towards them. They have also mentioned feeling a lack of purpose in the workplace and being disconnected from the “big picture”.

Regardless of these frustrations, millennials are displaying a demonstrable eagerness to advance and a desire to continuously improve and learn. In order to realise their full potential, the industry must embrace and adapt to their different needs.
