A £100,000 investment by the Welsh government is helping to secure twenty existing jobs and to create fifteen more at steel firm BRC Reinforcement Limited in Newport, South Wales.

The money will also be used to buy new machinery for the company, which is a leading supplier of steel for the UK construction industry. BRC has said that an improved layout for their Newport factory is also being planned thanks to the investment. The company claimed that this will allow them to further increase productivity levels.

Important recent construction projects that have relied upon BRC Reinforcement Limited for steel procurement include the Crossrail and Sky Garden projects in London, the Aberdeen Bypass and the Mersey Link. As well as providing steel materials, BRC is also the UK’s number one supplier of steel reinforcement and associated materials for concrete.

The company supports supply chain transparency and reduced carbon emissions by using 98% recycled steel produced in its sister steelmaking plant in the nearby city of Cardiff.

Welsh Economy Secretary Ken Skates said that he was pleased to be helping to create and protect jobs at BRC’s Newport site. He said that the Welsh steel industry was going through a difficult and challenging time, but insisted that supporting it remained a key Welsh government priority.

Community Union representative Steve McCool said that community members had worked hard alongside local management to secure the investment. He paid tribute to both the workforce and management at BRC’s Newport site, saying they had worked together to establish it as a “significant and strategic facility in the Celsa supply chain”.

BRC will match the government investment, putting over £1m into the Newport site, for which it has agreed a new long-term lease. The investment will include bespoke shear and bending equipment for more efficient production at the site.
